In ancient Greece, the Melissae were the holy women of the hive, a sacred order of priestesses who served the great goddesses through the living mystery of the bee. Melissa, meaning honeybee, was the name given to women who carried divine sweetness in their bodies and prophecy in their voices.
They understood that bees were not merely creatures of the earth but celestial messengers gathering the light of Venus from every flower, turning starlight into nectar and nectar into ambrosia — the immortal honey that awakens remembrance. They tended the Eleusinian Mysteries of Demeter, held oracular power at Delphi where the Pythia herself was called The Bee of Delphi, and served Aphrodite at her honeycomb shrine on Mount Eryx, where the High Priestess bore the title Melissa — the Queen Bee.
